Greening Communities

As part BC's response to the national climate change business , the provincial government is embarking on a "Greening Communities" Initiative.

This will involve commitments in the following key areas:

  • Transportation
  • Energy and industry
  • Communities and buildings
  • Forests and agriculture

Development of frameworks to implement green management plans, climate protection action plans, Official Community Plans Education: municipal staff, public forums, non-profit organization to provide environmental outreach services

This is a 3-year, $2.27 million initiative with the following key points local government and non-profits/local government partnerships are the focus projects should involve community and business address collective impact of lifestyle choices (walking and cycling to work)

Examples of potential projects landfills, control over land use, transportation planning, waste and water management local government staff training; implementation on how to "green" local industry and businesses

Announcement on Friday November 24 at the Fraser Basin Council of first initiative as follows:
$450,000 for Greening Communities Fund: Demonstration Projects community planning that integrates environmental principles into long-term sustainability projects that demonstrate the viability of alternative energy sources, eg. Solar or wind power. Successful projects are eligible for up to $70,000 over maximum of 2 years

Process Applications will be reviewed as they come in by a multi-ministry steering committee (on which RDO is represented) Over 50% of the project funding will go to rural communities Proposals must show commitment of local governments The extent and type of In-kind support for the project will be considered as an asset in the evaluation of projects

Eligibility & Selection Usually only one project /community unless projects are complementary and coordinated to avoid overlap In-kind contributions can take the form of commitment of municipal staff hours over the two year pilot program (further commitment of staff hours beyond the demo project time would demonstrate sustainability) 25 % come from "applicants: preference is 25% comes from community rather than federal matching dollars
